Most households have rules about chores and curfews. The stepmother at the center of House Rules writes a different kind, and she drafts them for one person’s benefit: her own. Her husband’s son is back from college, his girlfriend is a guest under the same roof, and the new code is about to be tested. Five episodes, two of them free.

The setup is a family arrangement bent into a game. The woman of the house, a stepmother by marriage, is restless and decides that the rules can be whatever she wants them to be. Her stepson walks into that. His girlfriend being in the house only raises the stakes, since the risk of getting caught is always close by.
