Jake is three months behind on rent, and the landlady has noticed. Rather than pursue the money, she suggests a payment plan that never touches a bank. He agrees, because he is broke and the alternative is eviction, and the arrangement works until it does not.

Then the landlady’s daughter finds out and wants the same arrangement for herself. Jake now owes one woman a lease and the other his silence, and neither of them is easy to disappoint. That is the whole engine: a roof over his head, a secret that keeps growing and two people who each hold a key.
